Q & A

Q-1:  Why are all the works on this site “FREE” to read?
A:  ZH and SM support a gift-economy philosophy. To understand in greater detail what this means, see “God’s Economy” in the “More” section of this site. (See also the online work of Charles Eisenstein and other gift-economists.) What SM hopes and trusts is that readers’ instincts will prompt those who access and enjoy SM’s digital works to support the author’s work.

Q-2:  What does “FREE” mean for this site?
A:  It means you are free to access and download* under the terms of the Creative Commons licence herein, but you are not free:

▪ to claim authorship or ownership of any part of the download;
▪ to offer any download for sale, resale, or compensated exchange;
▪ to perform any of the works for negotiated or promised compensation;
▪ to change or omit any part of a downloaded work;
▪ to enter into any agreement with another or others to create derivative works, such as audio, video, stage, film, etc..
(*All works can be accessed, but downloading capability may vary.)

Q-3:  What does “FREE” access or download entitle me to do?
A:  Read, listen, enjoy, share. However, ZH and SM request that you share the works that you enjoy with others by directing them back to https://www.zanthymhouse.ca, so our statistics and analytics can better reflect traffic, interest, and number of downloads.

Q-4:  Can I* perform a work if I do it for free or on the gift-economy principle?
A:  Yes, you may IF:

▪ you give credit to the author SMSmith;
▪ list https://www.zanthymhouse.ca and SMSmith in all advertising, promotions, programs, and performances;
▪ do not distort the spirit or integrity of the work;
▪ honour performance directives (if any) contained within the accessed or downloaded work; AND
▪ where any compensation is realized by you for your performance, it constitutes a genuine, unexpected gift for your performance.
(* “I” also encompasses “we,” herein and hereafter.)

NOTE: All the author’s MUSICALS are excluded from performance allowances  herein.

Q-5:  Can I perform a work if it will become part of a monetized website, like YouTube?
A:  Yes, you may IF:

▪ ad views are the only source of your compensation;
▪ you give credit to the author SMSmith both in your performance and online descriptive text;
▪ refer viewers, both in your performance and online text to https://www.zanthymhouse.ca;
▪ do not distort the spirit or integrity of the work;
▪ do not upload your performance to sites that seek to degrade or objectify any person or group;
▪ you honour performance directives (if any) contained within the accessed or downloaded work.

Q-6:  Can I perform a work if the performance is for a local charity or local fundraising event for a good cause?
A:  Yes, you may IF:

▪ you give credit to the author SMSmith and reference https://www.zanthymhouse.ca during performances and in printed materials, if any;
▪ do not distort the spirit or integrity of the work;
▪ honour performance directives (if any) contained within the accessed or downloaded work;
▪ do not perform the work in an atmosphere that degrades or objectifies any person or group; and
▪ where compensation realized is applied directly to the stated purposes of the charity / fundraiser and not for administrative or other costs.

Q-7:  Do I have to advise ZH or SM of any free performances that I do?
A:  No, but ZH and SM would be interested in hearing about your performance, how it went, and if it’s online, where to find it.

Q-8: Do I have to contact and contract with SM if I want to use any of the works for commercial purposes or where tickets to performances will be sold?
A: Yes.

Q-9: How do I contact ZH or SM if there are problems with access or downloads; if I have questions that Q&A does not answer; or if I want to use any work for personal or corporate gain?
A: Email: zanthymhouse[at]gmail.com

Q-10: Can I access some of these works on Scribd or elsewhere?
A: In 2013 and 2014, I (SM) uploaded several works to Scribd. Sometime later, I tried to get Scribd to add a “gift-economy” option to the free or paid options they offered. In the beginning, I was not versed in the gift-economy model and adopted a $2.00 access fee for many of my Scribd uploads. At some point Scribd changed their paradigm to a subscription offering and my works became unexpectedly private. I was not aware of this for many months, but when I discovered it, I became motivated to develop zanthymhouse.ca. I have not decided yet what to do with the Scribd uploads, but all that is there (plus more) will soon be here on https://www.zanthymhouse.ca. There are no other sites available to access these works at this time.

Q-11: Do ZH or SM accept manuscripts by other authors?
A: No. Sorry — the top three bullets in  the “About” section explain why.

Q-12: How do I participate in the gift-economy with ZH and SM?
A: Click the PayPal  button below and give what you feel motivated or inspired to give.
